Online HIPAA program curriculum

The online HIPAA program curriculum is based on current Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act privacy and security rules. In this course, you will gain a full understanding of what it takes for a medical practice to meet and maintain compliance.

Orientation: Learning at Ashworth

In this course, you’ll examine the goals and values of Ashworth College, time management, creating a realistic weekly and monthly study schedule, the nature and purpose of assessments, how to study effectively to prepare for and take an online examination, and developing the skill sets necessary for success in the twenty-first century.

Lesson Group 1: Introduction to HIPAA

In this course, you’ll review the history of the Health Information Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and its regulations, standards, and obstacles. You’ll also review its implementation costs and differentiate between its Privacy and Security Rules.

By the end of this course, you'll be able to do the following:

Summarize the history and evolution of the Health Information Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).
Identify types of Protected Health Information (PHI).
Describe how to implement HIPAA-related security measures.
Differentiate between HIPAA’s Privacy and Security Rules.

Lesson Group 2: HIPAA for Covered Entities

In this course, you’ll explore the issues that providers, healthcare clearinghouses, health plans, employers, and business associates commonly experience in relation to the Health Information Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).

By the end of this course, you'll be able to do the following:

Identify the issues related to the Health Information Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) that providers and healthcare clearinghouses experience.
Explain how HIPAA impacts health plans.
Recognize how employers and business associates are affected by HIPAA regulations.

Lesson Group 3: Technology and Training for HIPAA

In this course, you’ll learn how to create a technology system that complies with the regulations set forth by the Health Information Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). You’ll also learn how to train and educate others about HIPAA and perform HIPAA compliance audits.

By the end of this course, you'll be able to do the following:

Summarize the aspects of a HIPAA-compliant infrastructure.
Explain how to develop and implement an effective HIPAA training program.
Describe how to conduct a HIPAA compliance review and correct privacy and security issues.

Program Description

The HIPAA Compliance certificate program is designed to provide you with a fundamental understanding of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). You’ll learn how HIPAA regulates and impacts its covered entities, as well as how to ensure a HIPAA-compliant technology infrastructure and training program.
